1. Promote Media Freedom and professionalizing Journalism

The project provides support to advocate for media freedom with special emphasis on the Right to Information Act. The project also supports the promoting of Media Ethics and Self-regulation along with training new journalists.

2017

1. Promoting media ethics and media self-regulation in Sri Lanka

To strengthen the media environment for a free press and self-regulation through favorable policies and practices. The project will monitor the print media for violations of the code and work with Journalists on the outcome of the report.

2. Promote the Right to Information Act among Journalists

Compile success stories of RTI and engage journalists in a dialogue to continue promotion of using RTI for communicating life changing stories to the public. The project will also bring journalists who share common interest in RTI for discussion and planning future approaches.

3. Promote Media Freedom and professionalizing Journalism

2016

1. Eyeland.lk – A network for conflict-sensitive reporting and reconciliation

“Eyeland.lk – A network for conflict-sensitive reporting and reconciliation” is a 24 month conflict sensitive journalism training and reporting project designed by a partnership of media support and training organisations in Germany and Sri Lanka.

2015

1.Global Media Ethics Conference 

This was a conference in partnership with the Global Media Ethics projects lead by Dr. Rao from the University of Plattsburg along with other global leaders in the field of Media Ethics. The conference brought together academics, researchers, professionals and media practitioners from Asia and worldwide for a productive and rewarding exchange of insights, experiences, views and perspectives on the need for better media Ethics in news reporting. 2.Media Observation during Presidential Election 2015 

The project observed both the electronics and print media news to identify the balance in the reporting of the media during the Presidential Elections. The outcome of this report was expected to inform the journalists to disseminate information to the citizens of Sri Lanka in unbiased news reporting, enabling them to make the right decisions for the betterment of the country.

3.Right to Information 

The project contributes to increasing the knowledge of citizens in Sri Lanka on the proposed RTI which is to be enacted by the government. The project focuses on journalists, civil society organizations, government servants, the public etc.  The key objectives included development of a comprehensive guide for the citizens on the RTI act and how to apply the same.   The program will conduct awareness programs in all districts in Sri Lanka.

4.English for Journalists 

The project envisages improving the communication skills of the journalists in English. The project will offer a 3 month program to the journalists in all provinces of the country.

5.General Elections Media Monitoring

To promote collaboration and synergy among media professionals in Sri Lanka, towards assessing the change in the media environment and recommend areas of improvement.

1.International Conference – PCCSL

The conference brought together academics, researchers, professionals and media practitioners from Asia and worldwide for a productive and rewarding exchange of insights, experiences, views and perspectives on the need for self-regulation and ethics in news reporting.

 2013

1.Right to Information (RTI) 

The project contributed to increasing the knowledge of Journalists in Sri Lanka on the importance of having a Right to Information act in order to increase the public awareness to pressure the relevant authorities. The key objectives included the development of  a comprehensive guide for journalists and the public on Right to Information,  a module based on  Importance of Right to Information and ways to promote it, and conduct awareness programs for the journalists and civil society on importance of Right to Information in the provinces of Sri Lanka.

2.Online Story Telling 

The project goal was to harness the knowledge and stories of the next generation of writers at a single location, to address social issues of the Sri Lankan community. The approach of online writing is something that needs to be promoted as a medium of carrying important stories that could change the lives of the society.The outcomes of the project were to make available a platform to express the stories of the writers, and to promote more people who are unable to share their stories to come forward and share them with the public. It is also to ensure that people are updated with the what is happening currently in society, which creates a larger pool of knowledge in society. This gave many the opportunity to follow media studies and do proper reporting as they would want to pursue a professional approach to writing.

3.Sensitizing Environmental and Climate Change Issues

The project aimed to increase the capacity of media professionals in sensitizing through the use of the media the issues surrounding climate change to the general people, governments and other decision makers. Through this sensitization process, public awareness of the climate change issue will increase and it will help in reducing the negative impacts of climate change. A 5 day workshop was conducted for about 20 media professionals from broadcast as well as print, to understand the impact of climate change, its technical aspects, mitigation and adaptation.
